BRIEF CAMP DESCRIPTION: Teter Farm Camp is a unique opportunity for kids to unplug and engage with nature. We focus on a science-based curriculum, through which kids can learn about nature, where their food comes from, and participate in outdoor play. Campers will spend a week immersed in the natural world at Teter Organic Farm, getting their hands dirty with ecology lessons, hands-on farm tasks, and good old-fashioned outdoor fun.
CAMP INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES OFFERED:
Science, Wilderness/Nature, and more. Organic Farming, Ecology, Outdoor Play.
CAMP LOCATION: Teter Retreat and Farm is a beautiful 120-acre property nestled along a bend in the White River. Please visit our website for photos.
CAMP FACILITIES: Forested walking trails border the white river and provide a beautiful backdrop for kids to learn about nature and how the great outdoors is connected to the food we eat. The property also contains grassy play areas, a picnic shelter, play structure, basketball court, volleyball court, outdoor stage, meeting lodge, cabins, and an educational garden. During the summer camp session, all of our facilities are reserved for your child to enjoy. During the rest of the year our facilities, including the meeting lodge and cabins are utilized for a variety of retreats and events such as overnight retreats, birthday parties, team building activities, and family reunions.
CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Jonah Tabb (Farm Manager) grows over 30 different varieties of vegetables at Teter Organic Farm for donation to local food pantries and for sale locally. He believes that nature and gardening can transform how kids see the world. Jonah has worked on a variety of farms over the past 13 years, raising everything from goats to watermelons. He spent 4 years in New Orleans after hurricane Katrina, rebuilding houses and establishing urban farms in food deserts. Previously, Jonah designed and delivered outdoor educational curriculum for the Lousiana Outdoor Outreach Program, incorporating state educational standards with outdoor activities. He has AAS Degree in horticulture, and previously managed 10 acres in organic vegetables for Chicago restaurants and farmers markets. Jonah and his wife Ali live on the farm with their two dogs, Bella and Tilly.
MaryEllen St. Angelo (Farm Camp Director) has spent most of her life immersed in nature, food, kids and education, so Teter Farm Camp is a slice of heaven for her! MaryEllen has taught K-8 music and private voice lessons, been a substitute teacher, and currently works in 7 school libraries in Carmel. She co-founded the Plots to Plates Community Garden in Carmel in 2011 and co-created a standards-based garden field trip for elementary school students. Over 2,000 students have visited the garden for these field trips, learning how to grow food and care for the ecology that makes it possible. She began volunteering at Teter Organic Farm in February 2018 and is grateful for all that she has learned from Farmer Jonah and the other volunteers. MaryEllen has a son and a daughter in college and is currently earning a Masters in Sustainable Food Systems from Green Mountain College. She plans to start her own organic farm in the near future.
FAMILY CAMP SESSION(S): On the final day of each week, we will share a celebration meal with families, and present the week’s video logs and skits.
