SPECIAL NEEDS CAMPERS: Summer Camp is a series of six-day, five-night sessions for children and adults, aged 5 to 50 years, with a variety of special needs and their siblings The Summer Camp sessions are held at Camp CAMP in Center Point, Texas. Camp CAMP is 55 acres and includes activities like canoeing on the Guadalupe River, horseback, Aquatic Center, music, sports & recreation, arts & crafts, and outdoor cooking. CAMP modifies traditional summer camp activities to include everyone, regardless of the severity of the CAMPer's physical or developmental needs. Each CAMPer is assigned to a Tribe based on gender and age with a CAMPer:counselor ratio of 1:1 to 4:1, depending on the need of the CAMPer

CAMP LOCATION: CAMP is located in the Texas Hill Country in Center Point, between Comfort and Kerrville. We are approximately 50 miles north of San Antonio. Our campground has 55 acres on the Guadalupe River. Our camp has many trees to provide shade, as well as many open spaces for play. Please visit our website for lots of camp photos.
CAMP FACILITIES: We have 3 large cabins that hold a maximum of 50 campers in each cabin. The cabins at Camp are large, climate controlled, and wheelchair accessible. Spaces in the medical cabin are available for CAMPers who need 24 hour medical care, dependent on sessions. We have a recreation/dining hall, outdoor basketball courts, nature center, arts and crafts area, archery area, night activity pavilion, music recreation and paint ball areas. We have a newly completed Aquatic Center with a splash pad, pool, warm water pool and lazy river. Each water feature along with the pool house is 100% accessible to all Campers. Bordering on the Guadalupe allows for canoeing activities.
CAMP PROGRAM INFO: The idea for Children’s Association for Maximum Potential (CAMP) began when a group of Air Force physicians realized how important a camping experience could be to their pediatric patients with special needs. Founded in 1979, CAMP was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 1980. In 1988 CAMP purchased a campground on the Guadalupe River in Center Point, Texas, and became accredited by the American Camp Association in 1992.
Head nurse, Executive Camp Director and Camp Director certified as Red Cross First Aid/CPR Instructors. Director of Family Support Program and Assistant Camp Director are certified in First Aid and CPR training. Camp Director is Certified Pool operator including updates for waterpark management. Camp Director and Summer Executive Chef are certified Food Service Managers. Head nurse is an official facilitator of the Dept. of Human Services, Office of Minority Health, Culturally Competent Nursing Care CNE Program-a nine hour course that encourages cultural sensitivity, overcoming cultural conflicts and linguistic competency.
Executive Camp Director is a Crisis Prevention Institute’s Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Senior Level Instructor with advanced Autism Spectrum Disorders Instructor certification. CAMP passed the Texas State Health Inspection with 0 deficiencies. Passed the Baptist Child and family Service (BFCS) Emergency Shelter Inspection and is a recommended shelter provider for BFCS Special Needs Emergency Shelter Operations for the State of Texas. CAMP achieved full 3-year accreditation from the American Camp Association based on its Summer 2013 accreditation visit.
CAMP does its best to ensure that no one is ever turned away based on the severity of their disability or inability of the family to pay.
CAMP LEADERSHIP CIT/LIT PROGRAMS: Camp provides a thorough orientation and continuous training for the program. Volunteers will be trained on how to work with individuals who have special needs - to include child development, hygiene and personal care, behavior management, medical diagnoses, and CAMP policies and procedures. Training is mandatory for all new and returning volunteers. Volunteers can earn up to 99 service hours per session.
CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: The cost of summer camp is $1500 per session. CAMP offers the Scholarship Tier option to any families whose CAMPer does not receive agency funding and cannot pay the full cost. The Scholarship Tier costs are offered based on family income; the family’s 2013 IRS1040 and supporting W-2's must be submitted to qualify for this payment option.
FAMILY CAMP SESSION(S): January 16-18 2015. Children with cancer who also have some other condition or disability.
Date TBD 2 weekend retreats for people who have experienced a traumatic injury.
YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS: Respite Weekend Camps: Respite Weekend Camp is a monthly program during non-summer months at our Center Point, Texas location. Children and adults, aged 5 to 40 years, have the opportunity to enjoy recreational camp activities specifically designed with their special needs in mind. Families must enroll in the Respite Club to participate in the event. This program is housed at our Camp CAMP facility at 515 Skyline Drive in Center Point, TX 78010.
Parents Night Out (PNO): Parents Night Out (PNO) is a childcare and enrichment activity program for current Respite Club members aged 6 months to 13 years. PNO is free of charge on scheduled Friday nights and is available for children with developmental disabilities and their siblings. Families must enroll in the Respite Club to participate in the event. This program is housed at CAMP’s Executive Offices at the Boorda Center on Lackland Air Force Base (LAFB) in San Antonio, TX 78227.
Teen and Adult Day Adventure (TADA): Teen and Adult Day Adventure (TADA) is a supervised social program in the Greater San Antonio community for teens and adults, aged 14-40. Activities can include dinner, movies, sporting events, SA rodeo, and concerts. Families must enroll in the Respite Club to participate in the event. The cost of the event is the responsibility of the participant.
