CAMP PROGRAM INFO: In 1975, chemistry teacher George Hahn yearned to find a way to give his students a strong marine science experience through hands on exploration. Though classroom instruction is valuable, he knew they also needed to learn the practical application of marine science and so the Acadia Institute of Oceanography (AIO) was born. Located in Seal Harbor, Maine on beautiful Mt. Desert Island, the rugged Maine coast is our classroom. As the premiere marine science summer program in New England for 45+ years, AIO introduces students to the physical, chemical and biological aspects of oceanography while students explore their future in marine science.
Over 200 students from across the country and around the world attend AIO. These are all students with strong motivation and interest in learning about the ocean. We require a teacher recommendation for acceptance into the program so we know we’re getting highest caliber of student. Our staff are qualified educators, many with advanced degrees, who come to us from schools and universities around the country.
